Reach across cultures. Build partnerships.

As a new graduate nurse, you want to help your patients become partners who are fully invested in their own care. Patient- & Family-Centered Care is the second course of the Transition to Practice program. Through interactive activities and guided discussions with a preceptor or experienced colleague, you will learn to honor your patients’ culture and values and engage their support network.

NCSBN developed this course based on the results of the 2011-2013 Transition to Practice study. By investing an hour a week for six months (to complete the five course program), you’ll strengthen your core competencies and improve patient outcomes.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe patient-and family-centered care
  • Assess and address health literacy
  • Discuss techniques that protect patients and minimize errors
  • Explain how a nurse provides patient- and family-centered care
