What are some of the physical and behavioral warning signs of nurse drug abuse?

What can I do if I suspect that one of my colleagues is dependent?

Who is responsible for preventing and/or managing the effects of nurse chemical dependency within my workplace?

What does the process of reporting nurse chemical dependency look like?

What are the roles of my employer, colleagues, alternative programs and the board of nursing in this process?

What kinds of nurse alternative programs are available for recovery from addiction?

Course Objectives

Examine warning signs of nurse drug abuse.

Confronting Colleague Chemical Dependency will help you master these course objectives:

Describe the three dimensions of addiction.
Identify factors that put nurses at risk for addiction.
List the warning signs that indicate a potential drug/alcohol abuse problem.
Describe common narcotics discrepancies seen with drug diversion.
Discuss the role of the colleague/manager when a nurse is suspected of drug abuse
Identify the steps and phases of recovery.
Compare the traditional disciplinary approach of the boards of nursing to the alternative approach.
Describe the conditions and benefits of the nurse alternative programs.

You will study using some of the learning aids developed for the Breaking the Habit: When Your Colleague is Chemically Dependent video and facilitation package (©2001 NCSBN). This course also uses fun and interactive e-learning instructional techniques:

Watch and Learn — Watch clips from the Breaking the Habit video, following the story of Maggie, who is an impaired nurse. (Available as streaming video in Windows Media or QuickTime formats).
Learn by doing — Explore “Links to Knowledge,” visual and graphic aids, and key terms as you navigate through the course contents.
Reflect on what you learn — Complete short-answer and essay questions in the downloadable workbook. Note: Completion of the workbook may be necessary to meet board of nursing requirements.
Complete the course at your own pace — Guide yourself through the course and complete assignments at your convenience.

At the end of the course, assess your understanding of key concepts by completing the posttest. A score of 75% or above is required to receive your contact hours!
